Apawamis Club, Rye, NY–the setting: beyond compare; the benefit: beyond measure. Join us on Tuesday, September 16 for golf at a noted club which is, as one reviewer called it, “one of the best experiences of my life.” Set in picturesque Rye, NY, the Apawamis Club has a rich legacy dating back to 1890, and was formally designed in 1910 by Willie Dunn, who at the same time designed Shinnecock Hills on Long Island. One of the oldest clubs in the country, this historic course boasts both modern upgrades and original integrity, thanks to a 2001 restoration by architect Gil Hanse. Golf here and you are walking in the footsteps of such golf greats as Francis Ouimet, Walter Travis, Jerry Travers and many more, as this course has been featured in the US Amateur Championship, USGA Curtis Cup, the US Seniors Golf Association Tournament, the USGA Senior Women’s Championship.
The motto of the club is, “In Pace, In Bello, and Instans”—the intent was that Apawamis would remain a source of renewal in both calm and turbulent times. The purpose of this particular golf event is to provide benefit to our neighbors in Sandy Hook, who have recently gone through some of the worst turbulence a community can endure. The Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission—the official such commission chartered by the Town of Newtown—is an appointed group leading the community through the process of determining the existence, nature, location and funding of a permanent memorial. The mission set forth is “to make a recommendation to the Board of Selectmen for Permanent Memorial that remembers, honors and celebrates those 26 who died as a result of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and serves to provide comfort to those who loved and were touched by them.”
Sandy Hook students’ families and the Newtown community at large are well represented in the work of the group, and the commission has sought and received help from the planning members of the 9/11 Permanent Memorial.
Shemin Landscape Supply will be your host at Apawamis—this is Shemin’s 8th Annual Golf Benefit, and is its second golf event benefiting this cause. Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra was last year’s keynote speaker. Please join all of us on September 16th at Apawamis Club for a great day of golf, honoring those lost, and helping to provide a space of lasting sustenance for the Sandy Hook community.
